**I want to take a moment to thank all the RCMP officers and police officers across Canada for defending the law and putting their lives in danger every single day. My deepest sympathies go out to the families of the 3 RCMP officers killed in the line of duty Wednesday in New Brunswick. **
Say you and your partner have decided to split the bills in your household 50/50. This agreement goes on for sometime and then you get a generous raise, say a 10% raise. You offer to pay 10% more of the bills. So now you split 60/40 right? Guess again my friends.
What is that you say now 55/45? Wrong again!
The correct answer is actually 52/48 (or 53/47 depending on how your round) . A split of 52% for you and 48% for your partner. Think I am wrong? Lets do some math.
You go out and buy exactly $100 worth of groceries. You pay $52 the spouse pays $48. That equals $100 or 100% of the bill. And 10%of 48 is 4.8, 4.8 + 48 = 52.8 You want to pay 10% MORE than your partner is paying in this agreement, and I just proved 10% more is $52 (I will also accept 53 as previously stated.)
Go ahead and run it with other numbers if you like.
I bring this up because a co worker was talking about her paying 10% more than her partner and she said that “I make more money, so I pay 10% more so we split everything 60/40.” I had to remedy that situation.
Thanks again for stopping by.
